Mariah Carey’s festive favourite, All I Want For Christmas Is You, has seen a seasonal sales surge tip it over the 1 million sales milestone in the UK. And, as new Official Charts Company data shows, the British public have bought an incredible 15 million Christmas tunes, digitally, since downloading began in 2004.

Mariah’s much-loved seasonal classic passed the landmark sales threshold yesterday, establishing itself as one of the UK’s all-time greatest hits. The US singer was triumphant when told of the achievement yesterday, telling OfficialCharts.com:

“I just landed back in the US after performing a charity show in Africa for the Red Cross. I’m driving home looking at the snow in my hometown of NYC, celebrating selling 1 million copies of All I Want for Christmas Is You in the UK. Thank you, thank you to all of my British fans! Love, Mariah xxxx”

The British public can’t get enough of Mariah’s sleigh bell-adorned classic, having snapped up 68,000 copies already in 2013. Co-written/produced by Mariah along with Walter Afanasieff, the track first appeared on the festive album Merry Christmas and its lasting appeal has seen it generate an estimated $50 million in royalties globally since.

All I Want For Christmas Is You peaked at Number 2 in 1994, after being kept off the festive top spot by East 17’s Stay Another Day. It was unavailable for several years, however, thanks to the advent of digital and the song’s feel-good singalong factor, it returned to the Official Singles Chart in 2007 and has done so over and over again every December since, charting at Number 4 (2007), 12 (2008), 18 (2009), 22 (2010), 11 (2011), 20 (2012) and this year (it reached Number 12 in last Sunday’s chart).

The song is one of only 142 singles in the history of the Official Charts to pass the million copies mark in the UK. All I Want For Christmas joins eight other seasonal big hitters to have reached this landmark including Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody and Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas (Full list below).

Mariah is currently working on a new solo album, due for release in spring 2014.

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has been named the nation’s favourite Christmas song – a new poll has found.

The survey by money saving site, PromotionalCodes.org.uk asked 600 online shoppers to name their top festive tune from a list of ten provided.

More than a quarter of voters, 26%, said that Carey’s hit Christmas song was their number one choice.

One woman who took part in the poll said: ‘As soon as I hear these songs on the radio, I know that Christmas is just around the corner. Although after about the fifth or sixth time of hearing Noddy Holder shouting ‘It’s Christmas!’ they begin to grate a little. For that reason, Mariah would have to be my number one choice, as it’s the only Christmas song I can listen to over and over again without getting sick of it.’

Here are the complete results:

1. Mariah Carey: ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ ‘ 26%
2. Pogues and Kirsty MacColl: ‘Fairytale of New York’ ‘ 19%
3. Slade: ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ ‘ 16%
4. Wizard: ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ ‘ 11%
5. Wham: ‘Last Christmas’ ‘ 9%
6. Sir Cliff Richard: ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ ‘ 7%
7. Band Aid: ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ ‘ 5%
8. Jona Lewie: ‘Stop The Cavalry’ ‘ 4%
9. Sir Paul McCartney: ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ ‘ 2%
10. East 17: ‘Stay Another Day’ ‘ 1%

Mariah Carey: All I Want For Christmas Is… A Million Seller!

Mariah Carey’s festive favourite sees a seasonal sales surge which could tip it over the million copies landmark later this week, nearly twenty years after its release.

She doesn’t want a lot for Christmas, but there is ONE thing that she needs. She doesn’t even care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree, all Mariah Carey wants this Christmas is…a million selling single!

And, if sales continue at their current rate, the record buying British public will make her wish come true later this week.

Originally released in 1994 as the lead single from Mariah’s Christmas album, Merry Christmas, All I Want For Christmas Is You initially entered the Official Singles Chart at Number 5 in December of that year. It climbed up to Number 2 a week later, but was kept off the festive top spot by London boyband East 17’s Stay Another Day. A vintage year for yuletide classics by any measure!

It dropped out of the Top 40 six weeks after release with a respectable UK sales tally of nearly 306,000 copies at that point. However, thanks to the advent of digital and the song’s feel-good singalong factor, All I Want For Christmas Is You returned to the Official Singles Chart some 13 years after its original release (peaking at Number 4) and it has done so over, and over again, every December since 2007.

And the British public STILL can’t get enough of Mariah’s sleighbell-adorned classic. According to the Official Charts Company’s sales data, a further 56,000 copies of All I Want For Christmas Is You have been purchased so far this year alone, the track climbed two places to Number 12 on Sunday’s Official Singles Chart. All I Want For Christmas Is You’s total UK sales now stand at 985,700 copies, and should cross over the million copies landmark this month.

Mariah Carey will earn £455,000 for All I Want For Christmas Is You this year

Christmas classics like Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody and Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York are so ingrained on your memory by this point that you probably loathe them for 99% of the holidays, bar that one moment when a track catches you off guard as it’s snowing and you pull onto the hard shoulder to weep silently out of sheer Christmas joy.

To write one of these infectious songs is to have people sing them back at you in the street for the rest of your life and to have to sway from side to side surrounded by underpaid elves on Christmas editions of tired Saturday night live TV shows for the rest of your life – but fortunately the compensation is pretty good.

A list of PRS royalties (which amass through radio, television, jukebox and shop plays as well as compilation album sales) for 2013, reported by Prezzybox.com, shows the exorbitant amounts of money acts whose tracks have made it into the Christmas song cannon are still receiving.

Slade top the list, having earned £512,000 for Merry Xmas Everybody so far this year (set to reach £800,000 by Christmas), a song they recorded 40 YEARS AGO.

The Pogues will also rake in more than £400,000 for doing nothing this year, while Mariah Carey will easily be able to afford to re-roof her house with puppies thanks to All I Want For Christmas Is You’s continued popularity.

The full list is below, followed by YouTube videos of all of the tracks, which are best played all at once in your school/place of work in order to terrorise those nearby.

1. Slade – ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ £512,000
2. Pogues – Fairytale Of New York’ £386,270
3. Mariah Carey – ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ £347,615
4. Wham – ‘Last Christmas’ £301,622
5. Cliff Richard – ‘Mistletoe & Wine’ £98,408
6. Band Aid – ‘Do they Know It’s Christmas’ £78,030
7. Shakin’ Stevens – ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ £53,834
8. Pretenders – ’2000 Miles’ £45,344
9. East 17 – ‘Stay Another Day’ £30,219
10. John Lewie – ‘Stop The Calvary’ £13,258

Mariah Carey’s Christmas Classic may not break 1 million sales barrier in the UK

Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic makes a slow start on UK Singles Chart this year. Music Week reports the following:

The top two seasonal perennials – Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You and The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York – are slow starters this year, with Carey’s song climbing 68-47 (6,752 sales) and The Pogues’ up 85-53 (6,558 sales) this week. All I Want For Christmas Is You was eyeing its millonth sale this Christmas but its sales over the last four weeks (13,955) are 29.56% below the 19,811 copies it sold in the same timeframe last year which, if projected through to the end of the year, would mean it selling a further 42,504 copies, climbing to 989,402 sales at the start of 2014, leaving it 11,598 sales short of the million mark, which it would then probably not achieve until next December.
