Did they or didn’t they? Mariah’s marriage madness
Mon, May 5, 2008
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon did not get married in the Bahamas, it has been confirmed.
The couple is at the centre of frenzied speculation, with multiple reports saying they tied the knot this week in a sudden ceremony at Carey’s home in the island nation.
But officials in the capital Nassau revealed they have not issued a license for the pair - required by law before a wedding can officially take place.
Carey and Cannon met during the shoot of her latest video just weeks ago and almost immediately became a couple, despite her being 11 years his senior.
Earlier this week it emerged Cannon had given her an engagement ring, said to be worth GBP1.25m.
Amid suspicions of a possible publicity stunt, gossip website Latina.com claimed yesterday (Thursday) they married in a small, “very impulsive” ceremony.
Since then, various sources have claimed the wedding took place at Carey’s multi-million pounds mansion in the Bahamian island of Eleuthera.
Cannon’s family have also reportedly confirmed the “news” to a US publication.
But an officer at the Bahamas Wedding Registry confirmed they had not made the necessary arrangements for marrying in the Caribbean nation.
Not only do they require a license from the registry prior to the ceremony; as non-Bahamians they would also need to be interviewed by officials before the document can be approved.
This has not taken place neither has the office had any contact from the couple or their representatives, according to the official.
