Mariah Carey has pulled out of a new movie just days before filming was due to begin, sparking speculation she is pregnant.

The 41-year-old singer married comedian and rapper Nick Cannon in an intimate ceremony in the Bahamas in 2008. They have repeatedly spoken of their desire to have children, but have frequently been forced to deny reports Mariah was expecting.

Pregnancy rumours have now been renewed, with Mariah quitting Tyler Perry’s new film, which is due to start shooting next month. The singer-and-actress won critical acclaim for her role in Precious, which Perry produced.

She had signed on to star in Perry’s next project, an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf “.

Mariah’s representative announced she had pulled out of the film yesterday, but refused to give a reason for the sudden change of heart.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss her personal life at this time,” the spokeswoman said.

Mariah and Nick celebrated their second anniversary by renewing their vows last month. Nick has been particularly vocal about his intentions to have children with Mariah, and has promised to let everyone know when she is pregnant.

“We’re going to do it, and when we do it we’re going to let you all know,” he said last year. “But right now, we’re trying to enjoy the newlywed aspect.”
