News

Mariah CareyWith one song, two divas make history on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart.

DOES THE “TELEPHONE” VIDEO LIVE UP TO THE HYPE?

With a 2-1 rise for “Telephone,” Lady Gaga and the track’s featured artist Beyoncé have tied the record for most No. 1s since the Nielsen BDS-based radio airplay chart launched in 1992. The pair joins Mariah Carey, who tallied six toppers between 1993 and 2005. Lady Gaga and Beyonce pass Avril Lavigne, Pink, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, each with five No. 1s.

Beyonce first led Pop Songs with “Crazy in Love” in 2003, while Lady Gaga first appeared on the chart just 16 months ago. The latter performer, in fact, has yet to fall short of the survey’s summit, reaching No. 1 on her first six tries:

Title, Chart Date Reached No. 1
“Just Dance,” Jan. 24, 2009 (featuring Colby O’Donis)
“Poker Face,” April 25, 2009
“LoveGame,” July 25, 2009
“Paparazzi,” Nov. 14, 2009
“Bad Romance,” Jan. 16, 2010
“Telephone,” March 27, 2010 (featuring Beyonce)

And, here is a look at Beyonce’s six Pop Songs No. 1s:

Title, Chart Date Reached No. 1
“Crazy in Love,” Aug. 16, 2003 (featuring Jay-Z)
“Baby Boy,” Nov. 8, 2003 (featuring Sean Paul)
“Check On It,” Feb. 11, 2006 (featuring Slim Thug)
“Irreplaceable,” Dec. 30, 2006
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” Feb. 7, 2009
“Telephone,” March 27, 2010, (Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce)

All charts on billboard.com, including Pop Songs, will be refreshed Thursday (March 18).

  1. Dubai Says:

Can anybody explain this please! I can’t understand how these two tied Mariah for #1 songs. Mariah has 18 #1′s.

  2. LAMB-QATAR Says:

    Dubai
This chart is the Pop Songs Chart that they are talking about which is solely based on airplay on Pop radio stations only & has nothing to do with sales. Mariah has 18 number ones on the HOT 100, which is the most important chart in the world, even Michael Jackson had 13 number ones on that chart! The HOT 100 is the biggest honor for any artist & it’s based on both sales and overall airplay.

  3. Dubai Says:

    Shukran habibi…

  4. Liz Says:

well as long as this is just pop airplay #1s then i dont care..as long as its not hot 100 #1s! If lady googooo got all of her songs to be #1 on the hot 100, she wouldve beaten mariah for most #1s by any debut artist!

  5. obsessed fan Says:

So actually Mariah’s not too much of a pop singer afterall – she is really more R&B! I don’t understand why her releases are always categorized under Pop, especially on itunes! Mariah has 10 #1s on the R&B charts!

But I guess we can see the breadth of Mariah’s appeal – the R&B listeners like her as much as the Pop and Adult Contemporary listeners. This has been the main reason why Mariah has managed to do exceedingly well on the Hot 100 while her performances on the various genre charts have paled in comparison.

  6. joe Says:

I don’t see Mariah getting any more #1 songs on the POP airplay chart in her 40s, so it seems likely Gaga & Beyonce will pass her on that chart. Of course, with music one never knows but at least MC got there first.

  7. MCLamb Says:

It is amazing how much ridicule and unpopular you seem with friends if you don’t like Gaga but I don’t really care. I have to stay true to myself and I won’t force myself to like someone because they are hip, cool and trendy. I respect her artistry but I don’t care for how manufactured she is and how she tries so hard to appeal to the gays. In the old days, a diva let the gays flock to them, not the other way around. Gage knew that without gay support she’d be nothing, so she made sure to lure in that demographic from the start. Play the gays like a fiddle!

  8. Ben Says:

Well, i guess Mariah has a lot gay support too and so what?

  9. sami Says:

    Ben,

I think the point MClamb was trying to make is that legends like Mariah, Whitney, Madonna and Celine let the gay crowd come to them because they earned it, but Gaga didn’t earn it the old fashioned way. She went and courted the gay crowd immediately. There is a difference in how you come by gay support.

  10. obsessed fan Says:

I dislike Gaga immensely as well. She reminds me of Madonna. Tricks, tricks and more tricks. They are the ones who are responsible for the degradation of music. They are the reasons why being a good singer is no longer a requirement to make it big in the industry and are the reason why fantastic singers like Mariah, Whitney, Leona etc no longer call the shots.

  11. Marc Says:

    Obsessed fan,

Amen. Although I believe there is room for everyone, singing is no longer a real necessity in today’s music so long as tweens and teens can be convinced to buy into anything. Plus, if the labels can make quick money from gimmicky artists, then they will do so foresaking real talent. After all, it is a business!

  12. alex Says:

    @LAMB-QATAR

Correction , actually the Hot 100 is the most important chart in the US . Billboard are only US charts , but dosnt represent the entire world , there are other many important charts , and every country has their charts , Mariah is very succsesful in the usa , its her most succsesful place

  13. klos Says:

unfortunetly Gaga will do hits for long time… I have to say I like gaga few songs are good “love game”, “paparazzy” her songs make people dance… Mariah’s songs make people dance too, but make people think, cry, smile, etc… Mariah’s music is more complet…

GAGA’S NEW VIDEO isn’t as good as other singles… I don’t think that’s a good song… Beyonce and gaga is a bad combination… I’d like more to listen beyonce and mariah singing STANDING O…

But I won’t say I hate gaga just because she is doing hits and mariah isn’t… I think mariah can do it… but I don’t know what is happening!!!!!!! I’m almost sure that she’s having troubles,,, IDK Maybe with her label,,, or IDK… But something is wrong lately… But I’m sure she can do it… I love her…

  14. MARIAH MALE FAN Says:

    nice discussion!

  15. obsessed fan Says:

    @Marc

Yeah I agree! This is business afterall! It is not only about music. Mariah needs to think about the business, rather than just the music. She needs to surprise people. In other words she needs a re-invention. Like how Madonna tapped into urban influences for her last album. And how she drew heavily from electronic elements in her Frozen album. Mariah needs to re-invent herself. She’s been doing this R&B and hip-hop stuff since the second half of 1990s! And she hasn’t infused new musical elements into her stuff, unlike Madonna. The only time she did so was when she failed ironically (Glitter).

I’d like to see her pioneer a musical trend again, the way she did in 1995 with Fantasy. Or perhaps crossing into another musical territory? Rock? I’ve always thought that Mariah might do a good rock impersonation, but that’s my personal fantasy perhaps. Urban rock – now that might be cool.

I have a special aversion against Gaga. She reminds me too much of Madonna. Good businesswomen, but musical talents? Singing? I’d just say they both leave much to be desired.

  16. Mimi Says:

actually gaga can sing, just because she uses auto-tune does not mean she cant. let her enjoy her success because just like mariah gaga is a talented songwriter and is creative as well not afraid to step out her comfort zone.

all this hate for gaga sounds like jealousy to me.

  17. Bob Smith Says:

    Amen Obsessed fan!

You took the words out of my mouth about Fantasy. Mariah is not usually credited for starting a trend, but if you think back to 1995, no pop or mainstream female singer featured a rapper. We saw this trend exploding towards late 90′s and early 00′s with Beyonce, Xtina, Ashanti, etc. It doesn’t seem like a big deal now, but back in mid 90′s this was brand new. No wonder the remix got almost more popular than the original song, which was a #1 hit.

However, Mariah sounds and LOOKS the same since Butterfly era (more or less). Same dresses, same hair, same shoes. She does need a reinvention, and I think Mimi was a good attempt because it was a different Mariah record. It was a lot more bold, it was very rhythmic.

I am not sure why people are dissing Lady Gaga. She is very successful right now so don’t discredit her achievements; this is what people did to Mariah for a very long time and it was all out of jealousy. Even though her music is not fresh or ground-breaking, she is doing pure pop music and people are hungry for pop. R N B is NOTHING today compared to even 5 years ago; just look at (worldwide) charts. People are hungry for pop, and a lot of R N B artists had great songs that really are pop: Rihanna (don’t stop the music), neyo (closer), beyonce (many pop songs). Lady Gaga would not be popular based on her shocking image or gay appeal alone, she does have good POP TUNES – they’re catchy, not deep, and RHYTHMIC. Not saying Mariah should follow her footsteps, but she does need to pay attention to what’s out there.

  18. Jeff Says:

    @ Bob Smith

Thank you! Lady Gaga is doing her thing these days and back in the day when mariah put out number one after number one people were jealous and and would talk bad about how Mariah would be a one hit wonder and look 20 years later Mariah is still on top.

You cant blame lady gaga for her success.

  19. Marc Says:

I don’t think anyone is blaming Gaga for her success. I applaud her success. I think people are just frustrated that Mariah is not being played as much anymore.

Also, Mariah was not the first female singer to feature a rappper, in fact, that was Blondie with Fab 5 Freddy.

The reason Mariah is rightfully credited with starting the pop-rap collabo which is now rap sung collabo is because unlike the Blondie-Fab 5 Freddy collabo, the Mariah- ODB hit Fantasy actually went mainstream. It was this moment when other pop stars began to not be afraid to mingle with rappers.

Mariah wasn’t the first to do it but she was the one who took it mainstream and she thus created a whole new music genre.

  20. obsessed fan Says:

Nah I’m not dissing Gaga because I’m jealous of her success. I’m dissing her because I dislike musicians like her. That’s all. I dislike her the way I dislike Madonna, Britney, Jennifer Lopez etc. The musical performers (as opposed to singers). This has to be a matter of preference I guess. I’d like to think that the music I listen to and support are a little less like these folks whose success hinges more on their marketing strategies, their public images, the controversies stirred up by their images, private lives, etc, as well as the kind of music they bring to the table(mixing electronic sounds with pop etc). I root for folks whose success depend primarily on their abilities to hold a tune like our beloved Mariah, Whitney, Beyonce, Alicia, Christina, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood etc.

Having said that, I must confess I do like Janet Jackson. Although I think she belongs to the class of Madonnas and Britneys and Jennifer Lopezes. Oh well. The ironies of life. Haha.

Anyways, Mariah, please take a look at what your fans have been writing here! I think some have given very precious advice! Do consider them!!! :-)

  21. Dubai Says:

    Obsessed fan,

We are on the same stand. I also like Janet hahahah

  22. obsessed fan Says:

Thanks Dubai, Marc, Bob Smith and all the other lambs here!
I think this was one of the best discussions I’ve had for a long time. I think I found a lot of people who tend to think along the same lines as myself!

Let’s all continue rooting for Mariah alright? She deserves our support!

  23. Jarvis Hamasaki Says:

Hey there, when viewing at your site i see some sort of weird codes all over the page, in case it’s important I just thought I’d let you know it says this with all sorts of other stuff after it: “Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent in wp-settings.php line 12″

  24. lindsay Says:

it will be interesting to see what happens with mariah in the next couple of years, but one thing is certain- mariah is in a class by herself! she has made her mark in the music industry and accomplished things that no female singer, before or since, has. im not trying to take away from anyone elses success, but very few female singers will do what mariah has done in her career and it all boils down to TALENT! i agree with the other lambs that she definently needs to reinvent herself, but no matter what, mc is an icon and noone can take that away from her!
