Mariah Carey Single Review: Bye Bye
Tue, Jun 10, 2008
Having a pop at Mariah Carey’s lyrics is a pretty lazy pastime, but it’s tough to resist when confronted by her schmaltz-packed new single.
If her opening gambit (”This is for my peoples who just lost somebody”) doesn’t have you reaching for the sick bucket, then the succession of other toe-curling lines (”This is for my peoples who lost their grandmothers” etc.) surely will.
All things considered, ‘Bye Bye’ is a surprising choice of second single from Mariah’s E=MC2Â album. Dedicated to her late father, its soppy sentiments and personal lyrics are probably of interest to her hardcore followers, but to the casual listener it’s cringe-inducing stuff.
There’s a fairly pleasant drum machine plod and some regulation Carey screeching in the outro, but neither are impressive enough to rescue this track.
