Mariah’s hair out of place

Ireland & UK News

Mariah CareyMariah Carey, the type of woman who would willingly don a moustache to embody the role of a dowdy, unglamorous social worker in her new film Precious? Who knew?

Formerly best known for her floptastic performance in the 2001 fest of self celebration that was Glitter, her latest creative exercise comes out of left field from a woman who’s almost entire oeuvre is a monument to her own vanity.

But what do ya know? Mariah can act. So much so in fact, that there have been whispers of Oscar nominations. Not only that, but in a jaw-dropping display of professionalism, Mariah went as far as to entirely rub out her actual self. In Precious, she’s swapped sequins for cheesecloth shirts and make-up for facial hair.

And while “hideosity” is how Mariah describes it, the critics seem to feel the opposite. “I am glad people are telling me they don’t recognise me,” she has said of her turn as a frump. “But when it comes to my scenes, I get like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I can look.’”

One can only speculate on how she must have suffered for her art. How the agonies of having to face the world, sans entourage, sans hair, fashion and make-up team.

On the subject of the moustache, however, she’s happy to clear up any doubt. “Do I look like I have a moustache?” she said during an interview. “I’m not very hairy.” And who, for even a moment, could have dared to doubt?
