“Precious” Legal Drama Over Distribution Rights Resolved

“Precious” is through with its legal war. The legal battle over the rights to the Academy Award-winning film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire” has been dismissed.
Last year, film distributors Lionsgate Films and The Weinstein Company filed a suit against each other for the rights to the film, which stars Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton, Lenny Kravitz, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe.
According to Weinstein, it had bought the rights to distribute the film at the Sundance Film Festival in January when it made its debut. But sales agent John Sloss later announced that it had been acquired by Lionsgate.
Weinstein’s case experienced a setback in September when a New York judge ruled that the negotiations at Sundance were not enough for a valid copyright transfer.
Lionsgate pushed for a summary judgment in the case, and now claims that the matter has been “amicably resolved.”
