The 32nd edition of the prestigious Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) will be held October 8-18. At a press conference at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco last week, MVFF executive director Richard Fishkin and programmers Zoé Elton and Janis Plotkin presented highlights of the lineup for this year’s panorama of world class films. Several are world premieres, North American premieres and US premieres. Growing in stature, Screen International has named Mill Valley a “Top 10 US film festival”.
Two films are up for opening night. The first is Precious Jones: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire and is directed by Lee Daniels. This is the story of an illiterate teenager abused by her mother and raped by her father who is having her second baby. She learns to overcome her hardships at an alternative school, especially with the help of a teacher named Ms Rain (Paula Patton). The film also stars Mariah Carey as a social worker. Daniel’s film won the people’s choice award at the recent Toronto Film Festival.
