Mariah CareyLooking at the numbers, it’s certain that Precious was a critical success when it was released last year. The film win two Oscars, won 70 awards globally and was nominated for another 54.

Based on the novel by Sapphire, Precious is a stark and unforgiving look at the hardship of an overweight, illiterate and pregnant teen (Gabourey Sidibe) and her desire to turn her life around. She’s faced with the pressures of her abusive mother (Mo’Nique) but sees a way out through her inspirational teacher Ms. Rain (Paul Patton). It’s hard to believe Sidibe is a first time actress because she takes to this role so fluidly and it’s an impressive debut.

But for comedian Mo’Nique to play a role so devoid of comedy, and to play it so convincingly is remarkable and it’s no wonder she won an Oscar. Mariah Carey plays a small part as a social worker and surprise, she’s actually quite good.
